Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to school for our last 3 weeks of the quarter.  We hope that your Thanksgiving was peaceful and restful and that everyone enjoyed time with family and friends.

Weather: When the weather is very cold, children will be able to stay in the Gym before school starts.  When the temperature is between 15-30 degrees (windchill included), students will be offered a choice of playing outside or remaining in the gym from 7:30-7:55.  No students will go out if the temperature is under 15 degrees. When the temperature is over 30 degrees, everyone will go outside.  We are recommending coats, hats , mittens and scarves daily for outdoor play.

New grade 4 Teacher:  We welcome Mr. Raymond Griffin to Chaparral.  He has accepted the grade 4 teaching position.

Attendance Challenge:  Amy Biehl and Chaparral are in fierce competition for best school attendance. If Chaparral wins, the principal at Amy Biehl will have to wear a Chaparral shirt for the day and vice versa.  Our current attendance rate is: 96.9%  (Please make sure I will not have to wear an Amy Biehl shirt!)

Science Fair:  The Science Fair will be Dec. 5. The PTA ordered Science Boards. The boards should arrive this week. They will be on sale (for $1.00) as soon as they arrive.  In the meantime, students can prepare items to be pasted on boards. We plan to set up as many Science Fair displays as possible on Dec. 2.  The actual Science Fair is Dec. 5, 2016.

Spelling Bee:  Classroom Spelling Bees will be held in grades 1-6 by Dec.2 in classrooms.  The winners will participate in our All-School Spelling Bee on Dec. 12 beginning at 8:15 am.  The school will be represented by the first place winner and possibly the runner-up at the county competition.  Ms. Encinias will give any other information needed.

Winter Program:  Due to the numbers of students in the school, capacity of the gym, and parking, we will have performances for the Winter program and Spring program that will need to be split by grade levels. The Band, Spanish Dance Group, Chorus and grades K-2 will be featured on Dec. 14 at 8:15 am and again in the evening at 6:00 pm. (Children performing will report to their classrooms at 5:40 pm.). Grades 3-6 will be featured with the Band, Spanish Dance Group, and Chorus at the Spring program (date to be determined).

Awards Assembly:  Dec. 16, 2016.   Grades K-2 Awards Assembly will be  from 8:15-9:15 am.  Grades 3-6 will follow from 9:15-10:15 am.  Your children have worked very hard this year and we would love to share their success.

Web Pages:  Our new school web pages should be going live soon (mid-December). Once this occurs, the Wednesday Letter will be posted there weekly and not sent home as a hard copy.

Chaparral Lunch Recess:  We are cordially inviting parents to join us for lunch recess.  Students love to have parents join in activities at school, and recess is a great time to join your children to play and learn about peers.  We have plenty of yellow vests to share with guests, so please consider joining us.   Contact Mrs. Korce if you are available to do this.

Community Participation:  Ms. Vigil has arranged for the school to support those families in need by having a food drive next week.  We also have the annual Giving Tree set up for collection of hats and mittens.  Flyers sent today for both events.
