Parents and Guardians,

The first part of the 2016-2017 school year has gone by quickly, and it has been both a busy and exciting time.   As we reflect on the many things for which we are  thankful, we  would like to take this opportunity to share just a few of them with you:  We are  thankful for our students who come to school every day ready to learn – they give us all a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here.  We are thankful for the support of the parents in creating learning partnerships for our students.  We are thankful for the teachers, assistants, health aides, bus drivers, secretaries, nurses, lunchroom aides, support staff, therapists, counselors, and administrators who really care about student achievement and have the best interests of our students at heart.  We are also thankful for our volunteers who enthusiastically contribute so much to our school.

Most importantly, we are thankful for the parents that have kept the faith in us.  They continue to share their most valuable possessions with us and work hard and advocate to be a partner in their children’s education, safety and well-being. For this, we are ever so thankful.

Attendance Challenge:  Amy Biehl and Chaparral are in fierce competition for best school attendance. If Chaparral wins, the principal at Amy Biehl will have to wear a Chaparral shirt for the day and vice versa.  Our current attendance rate is: 96.9%  (Please make sure I will not have to wear an Amy Biehl shirt!)

Science Fair:  The Science Fair will be Dec. 5. The PTA ordered Science Boards. The boards may arrive after Thanksgiving Break; they will be on sale as soon as they arrive.  In the meantime, students can prepare items to be pasted on boards. We plan to set up as many Science Fair displays as possible on Dec. 2.  The actual Science Fair is Dec. 5, 2016.

Spelling Bee:  Classroom Spelling Bees will be held in grades 1-6 by Dec. 2 in classrooms.  The winners will participate in our All-School Spelling Bee on Dec. 12 beginning at 8:15 am.  The school will be represented by the first place winner and possibly the runner-up at the county competition.  Ms. Encinias will give any other information needed.

Winter Program:  Due to the numbers of students in the school, capacity of the gym, and parking, we will have performances for the Winter program and Spring programs that will need to be split by grade levels. The Band, Spanish Dance Group, Chorus and grades K-2 will be featured on Dec. 14 at 8:15 am and again in the evening at 6:00 pm. Grades 3-6 will be featured with the Band, Spanish Dance Group, and Chorus at the Spring program (date to be determined).

Awards Assembly:  Dec. 16, 2016.    Grades K-2 Awards Assembly will be  from 8:15-9:15 am.  Grades 3-6 will follow from 9:15-10:15 am.  Please attend.

Web Pages:  Our new school web pages should be going live soon (mid-December).  Once this occurs, the Wednesday Letter will be posted there weekly and not sent home as a hard copy.

Chaparral Lunch Recess:  We are cordially inviting parents to join us for lunch recess.  Students love to have parents join in activities at school, and recess is a great time to join your children to play and learn about peers.  We have plenty of yellow vests to share with guests, so please consider joining us.   Contact Mrs. Korce if you are available to do this.
